Pat Conroy, probably best known for his blockbuster novel, The Prince of Tides (over 5 million sold worldwide as well as a celebrated film) once said that to be a storyteller in the written word:
“Write like you are in love. Edit like you are in charge.”
Once I heard that quote I could never quite get it out of my mind. Not just with its brilliant application to writing but also in life. I think we need to explore our passions and dreams like we are in love, in freedom and with a desire to understand the best we can. But I think the most full lives are those that are able to then edit those dreams and desires, focusing in on the ones we want to own, to complete to the best of our ability and that bring us closer to being the person God has created us to be. Those dreams we would like to be known for when our efforts on them are some of the only things that remain.
Would you agree?
